Most failures occur when the temperature drops.
There are a number of ways to prevent this:
Ensure your cars battery is in peak condition (poor batteries increase load on alternators)
Try to use your vehicle for long drives rather than short journeys. This allows the alternator to fully charge the battery after each start up.
When starting in very cold morning it is tempting to turn on all the electrical systems on your car (lights, heated screen, fan heated seat etc). This will result in maximum output from the alternator which may cause premature failure. Try to work methodically to warm up your car, starting with clearing the screen and letting the engines coolant come up to temperature before turning on the interior fan.
