A compression test showed a loss of compression on number 1 cylinder.
With the customers permission we removed the cylinder head to find a cracked piston. With this engine normally being very strong, it was fair to assume the cause was not a casting fault of that piston but as a direct result of an extreme diesel knock.
A following call to the customer confirmed the suspicion that it had been driven with a nasty noise prior to failure. This engine is fitted with delphi injectors with which problems are common. A simple injector removal in time would have saved this vehicle from its now uneconomical repair.
